FiveM map not loading, falling through the map, buildings missing: causes and fixes for players and servers
FiveM falling through the map, map not loading, buildings and roads missing, spawning at (0,0,0) or dead. The real causes: slow HDD, low RAM/VRAM, graphics mods, NPC overload, a core that saves corrupt coordinates on disconnect. Fixes for each, plus the free scripts that fix the server side.
"Falling through the map" in FiveM covers two things people mix up: dropping through the ground (the map has not loaded where you stand) and missing map (buildings and roads never appear, you see bare ground or sea). They share a root cause, the machine or the server cannot stream the map in time, but the fixes differ.

Identify the symptom
| Symptom | Side | Main cause |
|---|---|---|
| Spawn and drop through the ground immediately | Server | Core releases the player before collision loads |
Spawn at (0,0,0) or spawn dead |
Server | Core saved corrupt coordinates on disconnect |
| Drive fast and buildings vanish, roads pop in late | Player | Slow HDD, low VRAM/RAM, heavy texture mods |
| Whole city missing, only sea | Player/server | Corrupt cache, or conflicting MLO/map mods on the server |
| Fall through the map at one specific spot (MLO) | Server | That MLO is broken or overlaps another |
| FPS drops and the map cannot keep up | Player/server | Accumulated NPCs, AI traffic, decals |
Player side
- SSD: the number one fix for "buildings pop in late". GTA V streams the map from disk constantly; a 5400 rpm HDD cannot keep up with a server full of MLOs and cars
- Lower texture quality / disable extended distance scaling: 4 GB of VRAM is not enough for Very High plus 200 add-on cars, so the map gets evicted from memory and reloaded in a loop
- Disable texture and graphics mods: 4K packs use several times the VRAM of the stock game. Try Pure Mode in FiveM settings; if it stops, a mod is the cause
- Clear the cache:
%localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data\cacheandserver-cache. Partially downloaded map files make whole zones disappear (one-click cache cleaner, key bindings kept) - 16 GB RAM or more: 8 GB does not survive a big server plus Discord plus Chrome; Windows pages to disk and the map drops
- Launch GTA V normally once after a game update so the Rockstar launcher verifies files before FiveM
Server side
Spawning through the ground, or a camera in the sky
Stock ESX spawns on esx:playerLoaded without waiting for collision at that spot, so players on slow machines fall.
ESX Legacy Core — X3D Build (free, drop-in over es_extended) adds Core.WaitForGround, which waits for real collision with a timeout, and Config.EnterWorldTimeout so players spawn when they press the button on X3D Loading Screen.
Spawning at (0,0,0) or dead
When a player drops or the server crashes, the ped is culled before the save runs; the position reads (0,0,0) and health 0. Upstream ESX writes that straight over the real row, so the next login is in the ocean or dead.
The X3D Build validates before saving and keeps the last good values, and Config.SaveInterval flushes everyone every 10 minutes so a crash does not roll back the whole session. That fixes "lost items and position after a crash" at the same time.
NPCs, AI traffic and decals eating frames until the map cannot load
Pedestrians, city-wide AI traffic, blood and tyre marks left all night are entities every client must render and sync. The more there are, the slower the map loads.
X3D Environment (free, one file, ESX/QBCore/standalone) has five independent modules: stop the game from creating NPCs and AI vehicles (and remove those already spawned, without touching other scripts' NPCs), disable map scenarios, disable the idle camera, clean the player's body, clean ground decals in a radius. A disabled module creates no thread at all.
Overlapping or broken MLOs
Falling through the map at one spot repeatedly is almost always two MLOs on the same coordinates or a corrupt ymap. Disable MLOs one at a time until it stops, and avoid leaked MLOs with missing files.
Too many assets
300 add-on cars streamed at once evict the map from the player's memory. Cut unused assets, use fileserver_add to a CDN for fast downloads, and pin sv_enforceGameBuild to one build.
Admin summary
ensure es_extended # X3D Build: WaitForGround + (0,0,0) guard
ensure x3d_environment # no NPC/AI traffic, decal cleanup
ensure x3d_loadingscreen # players enter when ready
On ESX Legacy 1.13.x these three remove nearly every "spawned through the ground / spawned at origin / lost items on crash" report without touching other scripts.
FAQ
Is it my internet? Rarely. The map is already on the player's machine; the network only affects assets streamed from the server (cars, MLOs, clothing) on first join.
QBCore? X3D Environment works on any core. The corrupt-save issue is handled differently in QBCore; this post focuses on ESX.
Does lowering sv_maxclients help? It helps server load, not the map on the player's machine.
