How Much Does It Cost to Open a FiveM Server, and What Do You Need? From 32 Players to a 2,000-Player City (2026)
The essential scripts to launch a FiveM server in 2026 with budgets at three scales: starter 32–64, public 128–500, and a 1,000–2,048-player city (Element Club Platinum, dedicated hardware, separate voice and database, staff). Which parts free scripts cover, which are worth paying for, and which must be rewritten once you reach two thousand players.
A fun, long-lived FiveM server doesn't come from having the most scripts — it comes from choosing the truly essential ones that work well together. Here's what to have first, then budgets at three scales that are different worlds: starter 32–64 players, public 128–500, and a 1,000–2,048-player city, the scale the leading Thai servers actually run at and the scale X3D scripts are built for.
Short answer: what it costs and what you need
- Cost: a 32-player server runs on under 5,000 THB of scripts plus the monthly machine. A 2,000-player city starts at 20,000–40,000 THB a month for machines and slots. Details are in the budgeting by scale table
- What you need: a server machine (VPS or dedicated, Windows or Linux) · FXServer + txAdmin · a free server key from portal.cfx.re · a MariaDB/MySQL database · a framework such as ESX Legacy + oxmysql · your core scripts
- Can it be free? Yes: OneSync is free up to 48 slots, and free FiveM scripts cover the basics, so you only pay for the machine
- Can I host it on my own PC? Yes, for testing or playing with friends. Open port 30120 (TCP/UDP) and keep the PC on whenever people play. A server open to the public should run on a VPS or dedicated machine
Have these from day one
- Framework — decide ESX or standalone early; everything else builds on it
- Inventory — pick one with
ox_inventorysupport, the de-facto standard - HUD — health, armor and money display; keep it clean and light. See the HUD & UI category
- Jobs — at least police, EMS and mechanic for a core RP loop. See Job Systems
Add fun and economy
- Minigames/casino — great money sinks to keep the economy healthy. See Casino & Slots
- Garage/vehicles — car storage and tuning for car culture
- Housing/MLO — more RP space and collectibles
Start with free scripts that actually hold up
In 2026 several parts that used to cost money have free versions straight from the developer (not leaks). X3D gives away 27, all for ESX Legacy:
| Part | Free and ready |
|---|---|
| Core | ESX Legacy Core — X3D Build: saves every 10 minutes, no data loss, economy lock before restarts |
| Admin | X3D Admin Panel: token bans, alt detection, logs from every system |
| Weapons | X3D Damage per-weapon damage, X3D Weapon Skins collectible skins |
| Base UI | X3D Notify, X3D Progress Bar, X3D Loading Screen, X3D Main Menu |
| Character | X3D Character Skin replaces skinchanger + esx_skin |
| Inventory and storage | X3D Inventory with hotkeys 1–9, X3D Vault, X3D Vehicle Storage trunks, X3D Use Item: meds, AED, repair kits, ammo, food, armor |
| Phone and death | X3D Phone, X3D Respawn |
| Economy | X3D Banking: bank, ATMs, transfers by phone number |
| Gang side | X3D Sell Drug, X3D House Robbery, X3D Lockpick, X3D Safe Cracking |
| City activities | X3D Music, X3D Fortune, X3D Carry, X3D Slide |
| Retention | X3D Daily Login, X3D Mailbox (mailbox + event redeem codes) |
| Performance | X3D Environment |
Every one is described in the free FiveM scripts post.
Budgeting by scale
Budget is about priority, not buying everything, and the whole structure changes once you reach a thousand players. Rough 2026 figures (Element Club prices from fivem.net/server-hosting, checked 7 Oct 2026, in USD before VAT; machine rental is covered in renting a FiveM server).
| Item | Starter 32–64 | Public 128–500 | City 1,000–2,048 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slots (Cfx.re Element Club) | 0 (OneSync free, 48 slots) | Argentum 15 USD (64 slots) / Aurum 25 USD (128 OneSync Infinity slots) per month + VAT | Platinum 50 USD/month + VAT (2,048 OneSync Infinity slots) |
| Game machine | VPS 4 vCPU / 8 GB ≈ 15–40 USD/month | dedicated 8-core high clock ≈ 80–220 USD/month | dedicated, highest single-thread clock, 64–128 GB RAM, NVMe, 2.5–10 Gbps port, edge DDoS scrubbing ≈ 300–700 USD/month |
| Voice machine (Mumble) | inside the game server | inside (split above 500) | separate 1 Gbps machine ≈ 60–140 USD/month (why) |
| Database | same machine | same machine + daily backup | separate machine + replica + automated backups ≈ 60–140 USD/month |
| Core + base UI + character + items + gang jobs | 0 (table above) | 0 | 0 (the server-authoritative ones keep working; next section) |
| Inventory / HUD / jobs | ox_inventory or X3D Inventory free + 2–3 jobs ≈ 30–150 USD | bought core set ≈ 300–900 USD | core systems written for the server (HUD, inventory, jobs, economy) ≈ 3,000 USD and up, one-time, plus a resident dev |
| Money sink such as X3D Slots 1024 Ways | one-time, 7-day free trial | same | same (per server, not per player) |
| Anticheat such as X3D Anti-Cheat | 0 to one-time BETA price | one-time + someone reading the log | one-time + an admin team on the log 24/7 + role-based join queue (the 2,000-player angle) |
| Replay such as X3D Replay (watch players back in game as report evidence) | 0 to one-time 599 THB (BETA), 7-day free trial | 599 THB (BETA) | 599 THB (BETA) + storage for recordings on your own machine |
| MLOs / cars / maps | 0 to a lot; cut first | 600–3,000 USD | 3,000 USD and up, plus someone keeping streamed assets under control |
| Staff | the owner | 3–5 volunteer admins | 20+ admins in shifts, 1–3 devs, support: the main cost |
A 32-slot server realistically launches on a small one-time budget plus hosting if you use free scripts where they hold up and pay only for systems that create gameplay. A 2,000-player city starts at roughly 600–1,200 USD/month in machines and slots, and people cost several times more than scripts; bought core systems usually do not reach two thousand and get rewritten, which costs more than writing them right from the start.
A 1,000–2,048-player city: what carries over and what must be rewritten
The same script that is smooth at 64 players can take a 2,000-player server down, because the FXServer main thread is one thread and its time budget per tick is shared by everyone. The rules for vetting a script before a large city:
- No server-side loop over every player every tick. A script doing
for _, id in ipairs(GetPlayers())every 0–100 ms is the biggest hitch on the server at 2,000. It must be event-driven or batched every few seconds - No SQL per action. One purchase = one query × 2,000 players × all day kills the database. The core must save in rounds (ESX Legacy Core — X3D Build saves every 10 minutes and locks the economy before restarts)
- Every event validated server-side and rate-limited. At 2,000 players, 1% modified clients = 20 people spamming events at once. Any bought script that trusts client values becomes a dupe hole instantly. Every X3D script validates server-side (for example X3D Use Item and the gang jobs that check distance on completion)
- NUI must be light. A HUD that repaints every frame costs FPS on 2,000 machines. See FiveM UI lag
- NPCs and AI traffic under control. Where 300 players stand together, every client renders the real players plus ambient population. X3D Environment (free) disables NPC and AI traffic creation map-wide, per module
- Voice on its own machine from launch day, radio channels capped at 30–40. Details in the voice stutter post
- Loading screen and core must wait for the world before spawning. 2,000 players joining together after a restart is the peak of stuck-loading tickets (X3D Loading Screen and the X3D Build work as a pair)
What usually has to be written for the server at this scale is the HUD, inventory, main jobs and economy, because every player touches them every minute. The X3D team builds custom scripts and does server setup for servers at this level specifically. Read on: anticheat free vs paid, ESX or QBCore, what ESX Legacy is and how to install it.
